FY 2018-2019 Budget Adopted
Compassion is the cornerstone of this business and giving back has become a staple at Paradiso Insurance
I am writing this letter today to inform the taxpayers of Stafford about the upcoming budget referendum, which is scheduled for tomorrow Thursday, June 7, 2018, at the Stafford Public Library, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The referendum is late this year due to our decision to wait until the State of Connecticut passed its budget in order to determine actual State funding for the schools and the Town. The timing of this decision proved to be the right choice!! Instead of going to referendum with a tax increase of 1.85 mills, we are now are going to referendum with a .33 mill increase over the current budget, due to an increase in the expected level of State funding for Stafford. This moderate increase in taxes is unavoidable due to reductions in the current year’s revenues from the State. For the average taxpayer with an assessed value of $130,000.00 on their home, the yearly increase in taxes will be $42.90, or $3.57 per month.

The Board of Education and the Board of Selectmen worked hard to present responsible budgets to the taxpayers of Stafford without cutting programs and services to the residents. The Board of Education reflects a budget with no increase over the current fiscal year and the Board of Selectmen reflects a budget that is slightly less than the current fiscal year’s budget. This was an extremely difficult task for both Boards, but a lot of hard work and multiple meetings resulted in these level-services budgets. After multiple meetings with the Board of Finance, the decision was made to send both budgets to referendum after two public hearings.

Together, the Board of Selectmen, the Board of Education and the Board of Finance are asking that all voters get out and vote on Thursday June 7th on the fiscal year 2018/2019 budget. EVERY VOTE DOES COUNT!

Thank you,

Mary Mitta
First Selectman
